In the U.S., 59.3 million people reported having any mental illness in 2022, according to recent data from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Here are four more numbers to know on mental health from the survey, which was released Nov. 13 and compiled responses from both in person and online:

  1. The percentage of adults who reported any mental illness in the past year was highest among those between 18 and 25 years old at 36.2%, or 12.6 million people.
  2. In 2022, 15.4 million people, or 6%, reported having serious mental illness in the last year.
  3. Similar to any mental illness, the percentage of adults who reported serious mental illness in the past year was highest among those between 18 and 25 years old at 11.6%, or 4 million people.
  4. Nearly half of young adults between 18 to 25 reported having either a substance use disorder or any mental illness in the past year at 48.8%, or 17.0 million people.
