Behavioral health Medicaid rates get a boost in most states

A majority of states increased Medicaid rates for some types of behavioral health providers in 2023 or are planning increases in 2024, according to KFF's survey of state Medicaid directors. 

The survey, published Nov. 14, polled 48 Medicaid directors on reimbursement rates, enrollment and more. 

Most states are planning increases or have already increased rates for behavioral health providers, according to KFF. Some notable changes include New Mexico, which will increase Medicaid behavioral health reimbursement rates to 120% of Medicare payments, and Oregon, which reported an aggregate increase of 30% in Medicaid reimbursements to behavioral providers in 2023.
