Arkansas crisis stabilization unit closes abruptly

A 16-bed crisis stabilization unit in Fayetteville, Ark., has closed, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported April 29.

The Little Rock-based University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences took over operation of the Northwest Arkansas Crisis Stabilization Unit in 2023. The university previously announced it would close the facility in June, facing a shortfall in funding from the state, the newspaper reported.

The facility closed April 11 after several staff members resigned, the Gazette reported.

"We were down to four employees, and at that point we weren't able [to] safely operate the facility and regrettably we had to go ahead and close," a university spokesperson told the newspaper.

The state operates three other crisis stabilization units, which are more frequently used than the Northwest Arkansas location, according to the report.
