Patient dies after assault at Minnesota mental health facility

A patient died after allegedly being assaulted by another patient at the state-operated Forensic Mental Health Program's North Campus in St. Peter, Minn., KEYC News Now reported Jan. 2.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services said the incident happened around 1 a.m. on Jan. 1. A patient and staff member were assaulted. The patient victim was transported to a hospital, where he died. The staff member was not seriously injured.

Police arrested the suspect without incident.

"This tragic incident has left our patients and staff badly shaken," Human Services Commissioner Jodi Harpstead told KEYC. "Our thoughts now are with the victim's family and friends who have suffered a terrible loss. We are cooperating with law enforcement and have begun our own internal review. Due to data privacy laws, we cannot release the names of either patient."
