Although both mental health and substance use treatment facilities are predominantly nonprofit organizations, the number of for-profit organizations is higher among substance use treatment centers, according to data published Feb. 2 by KFF.
Here are the percentages of each ownership model within the two types of facilities:
Mental health treatment facilities
- Nonprofit: 63% of facilities
- For-profit: 19%
- Public agency, government or department: 18%
Substance use treatment facilities
- Nonprofit: 48% of facilities
- For-profit: 43%
- Public agency, government or department: 9%
