New York mental health investment to add 200 beds

New York plans to add 200 beds to its state-run psychiatric facilities as part of a $33 million investment in mental health.

The funding is part of the state's fiscal year 2025 budget, according to an April 24 news release from Gov. Kathy Hochul's office.

In addition to increasing treatment capacity, the funding will go toward supporting people living with mental illness and involved in the criminal justice system. Of the $33 million package, $8.2 million will go to placing mental health navigators in court. Another $14.6 million will go to expanding forensic treatment teams, designed to support individuals with serious mental illness.

In 2023, New York launched a $1 billion initiative to overhaul the state's mental health system.
