U of Texas Rio Grande Valley to receive $2.2M for mental health education program

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will receive $2.2 million for its mental health training programs to bolster the profession in the area, myRGV reported April 4.

The funds will be dispersed over a five-year period from the U.S. Department of Education and its Mental Health Service Professionals Demonstration Program, which trains school-based mental health service providers for employment in schools and local educational agencies.

"Mental health is proving to be one of the most pressing issues facing our children and communities," Rep. Vicente Gonzalez said when announcing the grant, according to the publication. "This funding will train the next generation of mental health professionals that will serve our community. I thank UTRGV for all their work in serving our community."
