Nonprofit receives $15M for bipolar disorder research

Nonprofit organization Breakthrough Discoveries for Thriving with Bipolar Disorder was awarded $15 million in grants to further bipolar disorder genetics research.

Funds will be used to perform genetic sequencing on DNA of populations with bipolar disorder  from Africa, Central America, South America and Asia and study brain tissue from people who lived with the disorder, according to a March 30 news release from the organization.

"The discoveries from this research will over time enable long-sought advances in clinical care," Eric Nestler, MD, PhD, chair of the scientific steering committee overseeing Breakthrough Discoveries, said in the release.
