The Justice Department sued drug distributor AmerisourceBergen, one of the largest in the nation, over allegedly failing to flag suspicious orders for opioids and other controlled substances, according to a Dec. 29 news release.
The company and two of its subsidiaries allegedly "flouted their legal obligations and prioritized profits" over people, the Justice Department said. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.
"The United States brings this suit to hold defendants accountable for their egregious failure to report suspicious orders and their role in contributing to the opioid epidemic," the Justice Department said in the news release.
AmerisourceBergen and two other major U.S. drug distributors reached a multibillion-dollar settlement with a group of state attorneys general to resolve most of the opioid lawsuits filed against them.
