California to allocate $23M for substance abuse counselor students

California plans to invest $23.3 million to support students who are going to school to become substance use disorder counselors through its Earn and Learn Training Program.

Students at six substance abuse treatment providers across the state will be paid to earn a substance abuse counseling certification through hands-on training, according to a May 17 news release from Gov. Gavin Newsom's office.

The state hopes the initiative will help curb its ongoing opioid and substance abuse crisis by bolstering its behavioral health workforce.
