According to a May 7 news release from West Texas A&M University, the university will lease a site, which formerly housed a veterinary lab, to the state for $1 a year to build the new facility.

The 75-bed facility will be the only state-run mental health facility in the Texas Panhandle, according to the release. The Texas Legislature granted $159 million to construct the facility, but directed the state’s Health and Human Services Commission to find a site for it.

Construction is expected to begin this summer, and the facility is expected to begin admitting patients in 2027, according to the release.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
