Mental health of students: 5 survey takeaways

Empowering Communities With Integrated Network Systems has released its "State of Student Mental Health" survey, which collects responses from school social workers, teachers, counselors, administrators and other stakeholders working with students.

Below are five key results from the survey:

  1. Eighty-five percent of educators and social workers surveyed have noticed a deterioration in students' mental health.

  2. Eighty-nine percent of those surveyed said students' stress and anxiety is harming their academic performance. Only 2 percent disagree that there is a relationship between mental health and academic progress.

  3. Seventy percent of those surveyed said students are seeking help from trusted adults at school.

  4. Eighty-one percent of educators and social workers said they feel unprepared to support students based on their school's current support structure.

  5. Only 35 percent of those surveyed said their school or community has a tool for reporting, supporting, and maintaining student mental health challenges and outcomes.
