Binghamton (N.Y.) University has received $9.3 million in federal funding for mental health professional training programs.
The university will receive two grants over the course of five years from the U.S. Department of Education's Mental Health Service Provider Demonstration Grant Program, according to an April 4 news release from Binghamton.
One grant of $5.7 million will be used to fund the Rural Mental Health in Schools Expansion, which will train social work students at Binghamton to provide services to seven schools and 3,300 students.
The second grant will provide $3.5 million to fund the Family Partner Program, which offers families along with students social work services and provides educational opportunities for social work students at Binghamton. The program serves 3,700 students and their families.
The university plans to use this spring and summer to hire field instructors and will begin recruiting social work students in the fall.
