Texas plans $159M inpatient behavioral facility

Texas will construct a $159 million inpatient mental health facility in Amarillo.

According to a May 7 news release from West Texas A&M University, the university will lease a site, which formerly housed a veterinary lab, to the state for $1 a year to build the new facility.

The 75-bed facility will be the only state-run mental health facility in the Texas Panhandle, according to the release. The Texas Legislature granted $159 million to construct the facility, but directed the state's Health and Human Services Commission to find a site for it.

Construction is expected to begin this summer, and the facility is expected to begin admitting patients in 2027, according to the release.
