HHS to invest $200M into 988 suicide crisis hotline

The Department of Health and Human Services has pledged over $200 million in funding to support 988 suicide crisis hotlines and crisis support services.

The funds will be dispersed through HHS' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as follows, according to a May 17 news release:

  • $177.35 million for states to improve local response recruiting, hiring and training of the 988 workforce; implement additional technology and security measures to support infrastructure and coordinate across the crisis continuum; improve support and service for high-risk and underserved populations, including quality assurance and review of critical incidents; and develop and implement comprehensive communication plans.

  • $17.8 million for federally recognized Native American tribes, tribal organizations, and Urban Indian Organizations to improve response, access to culturally competent 988 crisis center support, improve integration and support, and ensure navigation and follow-up care.

  • $5 million for 988 Lifeline crisis follow-up programs that will allow call centers to provide systematic follow-up of suicidal persons who reach out to the 988 Lifeline, enhanced coordination of crisis stabilization, including with 911 and emergency service providers, reduction of unnecessary police engagement and improved connections for high-risk populations.
