Texas allocates $5M for forensic psychiatry training

Texas will invest $5 million in grants for the state’s Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program to expand mental healthcare access statewide. 

The funding will support nine Texas medical training centers developing, expanding or administering accredited one-year forensic psychiatry fellow programs for physicians pursuing mental health careers in the state. Each institution will receive $555,555, according to a March 23 news release from Gov. Greg Abbott’s office. 

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board administers the grants to strengthen the state’s physicians workforce and expand access to forensic mental health services tied to legal proceedings.

  • Baylor College of Medicine (Houston)
  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (Lubbock)
  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso
  • The University of Texas at Austin
  • The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
  • The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
  • The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler
  • The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
  • The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas)
