Fewer than 1 in 5 US adults can accurately recall the number for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, a survey from the Annenburg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania found.
The Annenberg Public Policy Center published the findings of the survey in a Nov. 18 news release.
Here are three things to know:
- The number of adults who can accurately recall the number of the 988 Lifeline increased from 11% in August 2023 to 15% in September 2024.
- A small number of respondents, 1%, reported that the number for the Lifeline was 911. Another 6% named other inaccurate numbers. The majority of respondents, 79%, could not recall any number.
- In June 2024, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services launched an ad campaign to increase awareness of the 988 Lifeline. The campaign targets vulnerable subsets of the population, according to the news release, and may have been too small to affect overall rates of awareness.
The survey included 1,744 US adults.
