West Virginia hospital to open acute adolescent psychiatric unit

Highland-Clarksburg Hospital in Clarksburg, W.Va., is opening an acute psychiatric unit to treat adolescent patients with emotional, behavioral and cognitive needs.

The unit will begin accepting patients between 12 to 17 years old who are experiencing behavioral concerns — such as self-harm, violence and suicidal ideation — Sept. 11, according to a news release shared Sept. 5 with Becker's.

The unit was funded in part through one-time startup funding for staff recruitment and training from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources and Aetna Better Health. It will offer specialized treatment plans for each patient based on their needs and recovery goals.

Patients admitted to the unit will have access to a variety of services, including medication management, group and family therapy, nursing and skill-building groups, case management services and recreational activities, the release said.
