UC San Diego Health and Imperial County Behavioral Health Services are launching a new psychiatry residency program, a first of its kind program in the region.

Imperial County is a federally-designated Health Professional Shortage Area for mental health services. The new residency program will help address the gap by training a total of 16 psychiatry residents (four per year), with recruitment for the inaugural 2026 class of residents expected to begin later this year.

UC San Diego Health and ICBHS have received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to operate the new program, which will involve medical and academic leadership from UCSD and collaboration with ICBHS’ medical and clinical directorship.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
