The University of Rochester (Minn.) is launching a master’s-level psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and counselor program, thanks to a $2.4 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of HHS.
The Uniting Nurses and Integrating Therapists for Youth program is a four-year project launching this year through a collaboration between the University’s school of nursing and Warner School of Education and Human Development, according to a July 10 university news release. It will educate 48 NPs and counselors, as well as provide financial support, flexible training options and access to mental health and wellness resources.
The program hopes to increase the number of providers in underserved regions — many of which have an average of 550 residents for each mental health provider, compared to the statewide average of 350.
