The facility would replace the disrepaired Center for Behavioral Health in Kansas City, Mo., and would use a portion of the state’s $50 billion budget.
“It is in terrible disrepair,” Sen. Greg Razer told the publication. “I toured it a few weeks ago and, I mean, we should not have humans living there. Just the lack of sunlight, I can’t even describe it.”
The governor did not request funding for the facility and the legislation was introduced late in the state’s session, according to the publication.
If approved, the facility would have 100 beds operated by the state and 100 operated by University Health Kansas City Hospital. It would also include an emergency crisis department.
