Winchester, Va.-based Valley Health opened its Behavioral Health Pavilion Oct. 26, consolidating outpatient mental and behavioral health services previously spread across several locations into one facility on the Winchester Medical Center campus.

The pavilion serves children and adolescents ages 5-17 and adults 18 and older. It accepts self-referrals as well as referrals from physicians, advanced practice providers and community agencies.

The building includes separate care areas for adults and adolescents, along with flexible therapy spaces built to accommodate a range of treatment needs.

A Digital Health Center inside the pavilion uses telehealth to connect local medical practices with Valley Health behavioral health providers, giving patients faster access to mental healthcare.

“The need for behavioral health services continues to grow across our region,” said Iyad Sabbagh, MD, chief physician executive of Valley Health. Dr. Sabbagh said centralizing services and expanding telehealth will help more patients reach care when and where they need it.

Diane Ricci, director of outpatient behavioral health services at Valley Health, said the pavilion gives children, adolescents and adults a single place to access coordinated care. Ms. Ricci called the facility a major step forward in how the system cares for its community.

Patients access services through a central intake line, where specialists coordinate care or referrals.

The project was funded in part through the Valley Health Foundations and the Stronger Together Campaign, a community effort to raise $20 million for mental health, cardiovascular and mobile healthcare.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
