Mental illness costs US $282B each year

The toll of mental illness costs the U.S. economy $282 million annually — a 30% increase compared to costs estimated in prior studies, according to an analysis published in April by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Here are three additional findings from the report:

• The annual monetary losses attributed to the effects of mental illness consumes 1.7% of the overall U.S. economy each year. 

• The financial cost of providing full access to mental health treatment services to all those who need it would be 1.1% of the overall economy each year.

• Mild mental illness equates to a work productivity time loss equivalent to 9.3 work hours per week, while serious mental illness leads to a productivity loss equivalent to 12.5 work hours a week.
