Medicare’s 2023 final rule a big win for psychiatric services

The CMS payment policy for next year increases Medicare payments for inpatient psychiatric services and limits pay cuts for providers.

Medicare projects a 2.5 percent increase in payments for inpatient services in fiscal year 2023 compared to last year, about a $90 million increase. Medicare’s pay-per-services will increase by 3.8 percent.

CMS also stated that it will apply a permanent 5 percent cap on cuts in the inpatient psychiatric facility prospective payment system wage index beginning next year.
