Iowa hospital's ED to add 4 beds, new unit for mental health patients

Davenport, Iowa-based Genesis Medical Center is slated to unveil its emergency department expansion this month, including four beds and a new unit for mental health patients, the Quad-City Times reported Dec. 9.

The expansion adds 10 new beds in total, which are located in a separate wing for fast-track care in a less stressful environment. Six rooms are specifically for low-acuity patients, and four will be used for behavioral health patients for privacy.

"Having a unit away from the chaos of the main ED and the business of trauma is essential in helping stabilize their medical condition," Destinee DeLemos, MD, co-medical director of the Genesis emergency department, told the publication. "The beauty of this unit is it's a much less hustle-and-bustle place."

The new behavioral health unit will also include TVs, cameras for staff to watch over patients and private bathrooms. It will also have a separate entrance from the ED.
