HHS puts more than $1.6B to addiction treatment nationwide

President Joe Biden's administration gave more than $1.6 billion in grants to communities to combat addiction and overdose deaths.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and HHS will distribute the funding through the State Opioid Response, Tribal Opioid Response and Rural Communities Opioid Response programs, according to the Sept. 23 news release from HHS.

"Today we are taking action to support the critical needs of rural and tribal communities by expanding access to opioid use disorder treatment," Carole Johnson, administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration, said in the release. "Too often, the needs and challenges of these communities are overlooked or not well served."

The State Opioid Response and Tribal Opioid Response programs will move to make FDA-approved medications that treat opioid use disorder more accessible and to support prevention, treatment, harm reduction and recovery services for those with substance use disorders.

The Rural Communities Opioid Response program will use funding to expand treatment and prevention of substance use disorders in rural communities.
