This comes after the program has faced several setbacks. Psychiatry department chair Jeffrey Lieberman, MD, was suspended in Feb. 2022, following a racist tweet. In July the university suspendedinterim chair, Helen Blair Simpson, MD, PhD, after a patient in one of the institue’s clinical trials died by suicide.
In early June, NYSPI “voluntarily paused all research studies involving human subjects,” according to the report.
OHRP also restricted HHS funded research involving human subjects at the institute.
NYSPI is “working with its federal partners to create a research safety review plan for HHS-funded studies, and out of an abundance of caution has begun a safety review of currently paused studies not funded by HHS,” Carla Cantor, its director of communications, told Medscape.
NYSPI currently has 500 externally funded studies underway, with budgets totaling $86 million, according to its website. Most are federally funded.
