Children's Minnesota nets $1M for inpatient mental health unit

Securian Financial donated $1 million to Children's Minnesota to fund the hospital's first inpatient mental health unit.

"It's devastatingly clear that we are facing an unprecedented crisis right now with our kids and their mental health," Nicole Hansen, executive director of the Securian Financial Foundation, said in a Sept. 21 news release from Children's Minnesota.

The financial service company's donation will be used to build a 22-bed unit at the health system's St. Paul, Minn., campus, which is touted as the region's first pediatric mental health unit with the capacity to treat children with complex conditions. The unit is expected to open in the fall.

"Even though this donation to Children's technically falls outside of our current giving guidelines, we feel strongly that we have an obligation to step up and help our community on this critical issue," Ms. Hansen said.
