The funding is part of a larger $1 billion plan to bolster the state’s mental healthcare continuum, according to a June 12 news release.
The addition of nine hospitals with more substantial psychiatric emergency programs and resources will bring the total number of emergency psychiatric programs to 31 statewide.
The growing mental health crisis has been cited as an increasing pain point for hospital emergency departments. While the issue is not new, it has worsened emergency department boarding issues, straining capacity at times, and has highlighted the effects that a lack of access to mental health care can have.
The nine hospitals receiving a share of the $39.1 million are:
- St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, N.Y. — $5 million
- Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital — $5 million
- NYU Langone Health in New York City — $5 million
- Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. — $4.9 million
- Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, N.Y. — $4.8 million
- Arnot Ogden Hospital in Elmira, N.Y. — $4.8 million
- Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, N.Y. — $4.6 million
- Flushing Hospital Medical Center in New York City — $4.5 million
- Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare in Barneveld, N.Y. — $493,253
