7 behavioral health closures in 2022

Here are seven behavioral health sites that closed or said they intend to close in 2022, as reported by Becker's:

  1. Pittsburg, Kan.-based Ascension Via Christi Hospital will close its behavioral health department after this month.

  2. Norwalk (Conn.) Hospital, part of Danbury, Conn.-based Nuvance Health, wants to end its inpatient mental health services as the hospital looks to refer patients to Danbury Hospital and boost its own outpatient mental health services. 

  3. University Hospitals' Richmond Heights (Ohio) Medical Center will close its behavioral health unit, the last unit in operation at the hospital.

  4. Kingston, Pa.-based Commonwealth Health First Hospital is closing, along with its affiliated outpatient behavioral health services.

  5. Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay, Ore., is closing its behavioral health services in response to financial strain and staffing difficulties.

  6. After Delaware County (Pa.) Council issued an emergency ordinance requiring hospitals to notify the county health department of closures at least 180 days in advance, Crozer Health announced plans to close multiple mental health programs in the county.

  7. Schenectady, N.Y.-based Ellis Hospital temporarily closed its inpatient adolescent mental health unit due to workforce shortages.
