2 systems help a Colorado psych hospital regain full licensure

Grand Junction, Colo.-based West Springs Psychiatric Hospital had its state licensure fully restored after nearly 30 inspections, The Daily-Sentinel reported Dec. 8.

The psych hospital was placed under conditional license in May 2023 after the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment found a number of deficiencies over the past few years. In 2021, the hospital underwent five inspections, resulting in six citations; in 2022, it had 16 inspections, yielding 55 citations; and in 2023, 21 inspections led to 26 citations. The hospital was placed under conditional license and was required to hire third-party management for one year and undergo more than a year of operational supervision by the public health department.

Mind Springs Health, which operates the hospital, contracted Intermountain Health in August 2023 to manage daily operations at the facility. The hospital said it had implemented several corrective actions to rectify the deficiencies and enhanced patient safety, staff training programs and infrastructure upgrades.

In August, West Springs was released from its Intermountain-management contract. By December, the hospital was in "full operational status" and had its licensure fully restored after it signed a management agreement with Florida-based Larkin Health System.

Since Larkin Health assumed management duties over two weeks ago, the hospital said it has seen a 125% increase in patient admissions, according to the report.
