10 layoffs in behavioral health

Several behavioral health organizations have closed behavioral health units or laid off employees this year.

Here are 10 layoffs in the behavioral health field Becker's has reported in 2024:

  1. Dallas-based Steward Health Care will lay off 255 employees at Phoenix-based St. Luke's Behavioral Health Center. Most affected employees were set to be laid off Oct. 1. However, the notice states that a small number of employees will remain on staff to perform essential administrative tasks.

  2. Wheat Ridge, Colo.-based Jefferson Center will lay off 25 employees to reduce costs, according to The Colorado Sun.

  3. Brightline, a pediatric behavioral telehealth provider, will lay off staff. The company did not say how many employees will be affected. The layoffs come as the company plans to shift from telehealth to a brick-and-mortar model.

  4. Orange County, Calif., will terminate its contract with nonprofit mental health provider Be Well. The closure will lead Be Well to lay off more than 100 employees, CEO Phillip Franks told Voice of OC

  5. Fort Collins, Colo.-based SummitStone Health Partners laid off 75 employees — around 11% of its workforce — in August.

  6. North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minn., closed its outpatient mental health services at the end of August. The system laid off 27 employees in mental health roles.

  7. Grand Junction, Colo.-based Mind Springs Health, laid off 71 employees between May 31 and June 3. The layoffs affected multiple areas, including executive positions, clinicians, revenue cycle and human resources, a spokesperson confirmed to Becker's.

  8. Signature Psychiatric Hospital, a facility owned by Franklin, Tenn.-based Acadia Healthcare, will close its two locations in Kansas City, Mo., and Liberty, Mo. More than 150 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the closures.

  9. Renton, Wash.-based Providence closed its inpatient psychiatric unit for children at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Wash., in September. Around 50 jobs were cut when the unit closed, the system told Becker's. Providence said it will work with affected employees to find other roles within the system wherever possible.

  10. More than 700 employees of Retreat Behavioral Health were left without jobs or their final paychecks when the company abruptly closed its three locations.
