Yale settles lawsuit alleging mental health discrimination against students

Yale University in New Haven, Conn., reached a settlement in a federal lawsuit that alleged the university discriminated against students with mental health disabilities, NBC News reported Aug. 26.

The lawsuit alleged that Yale placed pressure on students struggling with their mental health to withdraw from the university, as well as placing burdens on students who were looking to be reinstated following withdrawal.

Through the settlement, Yale will be required to update its policies regarding medical leaves of absence and remove unnecessary barriers to reinstatement for students who wish to return to the university.

Yale will also begin allowing students to study part time if they have urgent medical needs, offering a 50 percent reduction in tuition for students who are granted the accommodation at the beginning of the term, the report said.
