A new psychiatry residency program is set to launch in Texas next summer through a partnership between Conroe-based Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare, Huntsville (Texas) Memorial Hospital and the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, also in Conroe.

The residency program will launch in July 2026 with four students. Residents will undergo clinical rotations at both Huntsville Memorial Hospital and Tri-County’s outpatient and community-based programs, preparing them to treat patients across the behavioral health spectrum.

The new program comes as Texas faces a severe shortage of mental health providers, particularly in rural areas. Nearly all of the state’s 254 counties are designated as mental health professional shortage areas, and more than 170 lack a single licensed psychiatrist, according to a Dec. 12 news release.

“This collaboration is a critical step in expanding mental health resources by training compassionate, competent psychiatrists who are equipped to meet the growing needs of the populations we serve,” Evan Roberson, Tri-County’s executive director, said in the release.
