Suicide rates rise among Hispanic populations

The suicide rate among Hispanic populations across the United States has seen a significant increase over the last decade, according to a Jan. 22 report from KFF Health News

Data from the CDC has shown that the suicide rate among Hispanics grew from 5.7 to 7.9 per 100,000 people between 2011 and 2021. Meanwhile, the suicide rate among Hispanic children 12 and younger spiked by 92.3% between 2010 and 2019.

A variety of social, economic, cultural and systemic pressures can be linked to mental health struggles across minority groups. Stress related to immigration status can also lead to mental health challenges, with a study of 547 Latino adolescents finding detention or deportation of a family member was linked to higher odds of suicidal ideation.

Lack of access to mental health and language barriers are additional challenges, the report said.
