Meta plans new mental health protections for teens

Meta is implementing more features to direct teenagers to mental health resources and hide potentially sensitive content on Facebook and Instagram.

In a Dec. 9 blog post, the tech giant said it will hide content relating to self-harm and other sensitive topics from teenagers' feeds, even if it is posted by someone they follow.

Meta will also hide results for searches related suicide, self-harm and eating disorders, and it will direct teen users to resources for help when they search for these topics. Meta already hides certain searches, it said in its blog post, but will extend the protection to more terms.

Meta has faced allegations the company knew its platforms were worsening teenagers' mental health and body image. Meta is currently facing a lawsuit from 41 states alleging the company designed its platforms to be addictive to teenagers.
