Louisiana gets 1st perinatal mental health unit

Baton Rouge, La.-based Woman’s Hospital opened the state’s first perinatal mental health unit.

The $8 million, 9,130-square-foot facility will treat pregnant and postpartum mothers with mental health needs, according to an Aug. 27 hospital news release. The unit features a large outdoor terrace and private bedrooms and bathrooms to serve up to 10 patients at a time . It will offer services to women aged 18 and older who are pregnant, up to one year postpartum, or are within a year of suffering a pregnancy loss. Provided services and offerings include  recreational therapies, newborn visitation, group activities, lactation consultants, psychiatric-trained nurses and social workers.

The unit accepted its first patients Sept. 3.
