HHS issues advisory on mental health symptoms of long COVID

HHS and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration have released an advisory on the mental health symptoms and conditions that have been associated with long COVID-19.

The symptoms and conditions can be linked to long COVID itself or additional stressors such as physical and mental chronic illness, social isolation, financial insecurity, caregiver burnout and grief, according to a June 21 news release.

These symptoms include fatigue, cognitive impairment, post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms and initial onset of substance use disorder.

"People with Long COVID need to be properly identified and, as needed, referred for treatment for mental health conditions, in addition to addressing their physical symptoms," SAMHSA leader Miriam E. Delphin-Rittmon, PhD, said in the release. "SAMHSA provides a range of services and supports to help people connect directly, including through FindSupport.gov and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline."
