CBS News' Jonathan Vigliotti spoke with John Oliver, a public health official in Maui, Hawaii, about the mental health resources available to the survivors of what has become the "deadliest fire in modern U.S. history," according to an Aug. 16 report.
Mr. Oliver said in the report that receiving access to resources has been "very challenging," but there are people coming to the island every day to address mental healthcare.
The loss of internet access has been making it increasingly difficult to communicate with individuals providing mental healthcare, so the island has resorted to sending teams to go door-to-door across neighborhoods to check in on survivors.
Mr. Oliver said asking a question as simple as "How are you feeling?" can start necessary conversations tending to the "heartache" the island has been experiencing, according to the report.
