California health system to close inpatient behavioral unit

Escondido, Calif.-based Palomar Health will close its inpatient behavioral unit while a new facility is being constructed, The San-Diego Union Tribune reported April 4.

In a news release shared with Becker’s, Palomar Health said it will close its 12-bed inpatient psychiatric unit June 30. The move will allow the hospital to focus on constructing a 120-bed behavioral health hospital,according to the release.

Construction on the facility is slated to begin in May. 

Palomar has a deal with San Diego, Calif.-based Sharp HealthCare to take additional psychiatric patients while the inpatient unit is closed, according to the release. Sharp HealthCare told the Union-Tribune it expects to receive an additional six to nine patients per day while Palomar Health’s unit is closed.
