16 stats to know for Children's Mental Health Awareness Week

May 7-13 is Children's Mental Health Awareness Week.

Here are 16 statistics to know about children's mental health, according to the CDC:

  1. One in 6 children in the U.S. between 2 and 8 have been diagnosed with a mental, behavioral or developmental disorder.
  2. Nearly 8 in 10 children with depression have received treatment.
  3. Six in 10 children with anxiety have received treatment.
  4. More than 1 in 5 children living 100 percent below the poverty line have a mental, behavioral or developmental disorder.
  5. More than 5 in 10 children with behavioral disorders have received treatment.
  6. 9.8 percent of children in the U.S. (6 million) have been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
  7. 9.4 percent of children in the U.S. (5.8 million) have been diagnosed with anxiety.
  8. 8.9 percent of children in the U.S. (5.5 million) have been diagnosed with "behavior problems."
  9. 4.4 percent of children in the U.S. (2.7 million) have been diagnosed with depression.
  10. 3 in 4 children with depression also had anxiety.
  11. 1 in 2 children with depression also had "behavior problems."
  12. 15.1 percent of adolescents reported experiencing a major depressive episode.
  13. 36.7 percent of adolescents reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness.
  14. 4.1 percent of adolescents reported having substance use disorder.
  15. 18.8 percent of adolescents reported seriously considering suicide.
  16. 8.9 percent of adolescents reported attempting suicide.
