Elevance Health announced two leadership changes Aug. 24, swapping the president of its New Jersey health plan into the top role at its behavioral health division and installing a longtime government affairs executive in his place.

Patrick Fox, MD, has been named president of Carelon Behavioral Health, effective immediately, after previously serving as president of Wellpoint New Jersey. Patrick Gillespie, previously Elevance’s regional vice president of state affairs across the Northeast, has succeeded Dr. Fox as president of Wellpoint New Jersey.

Dr. Fox is a board-certified adult and forensic psychiatrist and previously led Anthem’s Medicaid business in Colorado. He has also served as director of the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health and chief medical officer for the Colorado Department of Human Services.

Before joining Elevance Health, Mr. Gillespie held government affairs roles at Cigna and leadership positions at industry trade organizations, including the New Jersey Association of Health Plans.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
