The health system released its 2022 annual report April 6.
Six things to know about UHS’ 2022 performance and its behavioral health segment:
1. In 2022, UHS provided care to more than 3.4 million patients and generated revenues of $13.4 billion, a 6 percent increase year over year. Expenses increased 9.7 percent year over year to $12.4 billion, while net income dropped 31.9 percent to $675.6 million.
2. The labor shortage has led UHS to hire temporary personnel and increase wages and benefits to recruit and retain nurses and other personnel at its acute care and behavioral health hospitals in several markets. At certain facilities — particularly in behavioral health — UHS said it has been unable to fill all vacant positions, forcing it to limit patient volumes.
3. The behavioral health division served more than 730,000 patients, had 6.2 million patient days and added 391 inpatient beds at new and existing facilities.
4. UHS has 94,000 employees, including more than 1,700 physicians and 22,000 nurses.
5. Revenues from UHS’ acute care services were up 4.1 percent year over year on a same-facility basis, while revenues from behavioral healthcare services climbed 4.2 percent.
6. The system has grown to include 28 acute care hospitals, 331 inpatient behavioral health facilities, 39 outpatient facilities, an insurance offering and a physician network.
