Staten Island University Hospital in New York City was awarded state grant funding to expand behavioral health and addiction services across the borough.
The hospital is part of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health. The funding includes $3.5 million in centers for excellence funding and an additional $7 million in previously awarded state capital funding, the health system said in a Jan. 26 news release. The multiyear investment is intended to enhance coordinated behavioral health services for adults, children and families in centers for excellence.
The funding also includes $5.4 million to further support pediatric behavioral health services. The funding is expected to support short-term stabilization services for children awaiting longer-term care and to reduce barriers to access for individuals at different stages of life. It will also be used to improve substance use disorder treatment.
“This investment allows us to move beyond a fragmented model and build a true system of care – one that treats addiction, mental health, and physical health together,” John Young, MD, PhD, chair and senior vice president of behavioral health at Northwell Health, said in the release.
Staten Island University Hospital launched its Linkage, Intake and Navigation for Kids program in January to provide children and adolescents with more rapid access to mental health services. Additional centers are planned as part of the system’s broader behavioral health expansion.
