Why addiction treatment for teens is expensive, hard to find

Residential addiction treatment for teenagers is difficult to come by despite demand, according to a study published Jan. 8 in Health Affairs.

The study, led by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, looked into 160 residential addiction treatment facilities offering opioid use disorder for adolescents across the country as of December 2022.

Researchers found that almost half the facilities had a wait time for admittance, with the average wait time for a bed being 28.4 days. Meanwhile, the average daily cost for treatment was $878, and the average monthly cost was $28,731.
