West Virginia mental health center receives grant to support addiction treatment services

Southern Highlands Mental Health in Princeton, W.V., is one of five grant recipients in the state to support programs focused on opioid addiction and specifically newborns facing opioid withdrawal, The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reported Aug. 15.

Southern Highlands will receive $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support its program focused on reducing the incidence and impact of neonatal abstinence syndrome in rural communities across the state.

Neonatal abstinence syndrome occurs when newborns experience withdrawal from certain substances, including opioids, that they were exposed to during pregnancy, the report said.
