Walgreens paying San Francisco $230M over opioid crisis

Walgreens settled an opioid lawsuit with the city of San Francisco for nearly $230 million, the largest award to a local jurisdiction against an opioid defendant, The Washington Post reported May 18.

The settlement will fund local efforts to address the opioid crisis to the tune of $200 million, the report said.

Opioid-related overdose deaths in San Francisco increased 478 percent between 2015 and 2020, the report said, citing the city attorney's office. About 25 percent of visits to one of San Francisco's largest hospitals are opioid-related.
