Kentucky physician gets 8 years in prison for opioid, fraud charges

Former physician Jeffrey Campbell has been sentenced to eight years in prison for unlawful distribution of controlled substances, including opioids, along with healthcare fraud, the Justice Department reported March 30.

He was also convicted of money laundering. Mark Dyer, a nurse practitioner, received the same charges and was sentenced to five years in prison. The two also received three years of supervised release.

Mr. Campbell's practice, Louisville, Ky.-based Physicians Primary Care, was also found guilty of these charges and is required to pay a $1 million fine.

Mr. Campbell, Mr. Dyer and PPC were found to have unlawfully distributed controlled substances including oxycodone and methadone outside of a legitimate medical purpose, according to a June 2021 release from the Justice Department announcing their convictions.

The parties also fraudulently billed Kentucky Medicaid, Indiana Medicaid, Tricare, Medicare and other health benefit programs by submitting claims for physical therapy, counseling and exercise services using physician management codes to receive higher reimbursement, even when services were not performed by a physician.
