Idaho seeks to limit free naloxone kits

A new bill in Idaho would only allow first responders to use naloxone drug overdose kits, Longview News-Journal reported April 1.

Currently, shelters, substance use disorder treatment providers, recovery and crisis centers, hospital emergency departments, public health departments, harm reduction programs and other entities in addition to first responders can access free naloxone kits.

The bill, which has passed both the state's Senate and House of Representatives, would also allocate $150 million for behavioral healthcare and utilize federal funds to help curb the opioid crisis.

Opponents of the bill argue that naloxone will be inaccessible, especially in rural areas, as only 25 percent of naloxone kits have been used by first responders, according to the publication.
