7 addiction treatment updates in February

Here are seven addiction treatment updates Becker's has reported on since Feb. 14:

  1. New York City pharmacist Daniel Russo, PharmD, pleaded guilty to opioid distribution and tax charges, the Justice Department said Feb. 17.
  2. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state is creating an Office of Opioid Recovery within the Department of Children and Families. The office will include researchers and epidemiologists tasked with finding ways to help people in recovery.
  3. The department of medicine at the University of Cincinnati will establish a faculty position focused on the research and treatment of substance misuse.
  4. The Cherokee Nation has unveiled its first in-house drug treatment center as part of a $100 million investment in mental health through the nation's Public Health and Wellness Fund Act. 
  5. Jason Kirby, MD, chief medical officer of Landmark Recovery, a national addiction treatment provider, has been elected president of the Tennessee Society of Addiction Medicine.
  6. Blair Drug and Alcohol Partnerships has been awarded $772,000 to create a behavioral health unit at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Altoona. The funding comes from the state's Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs.
  7. The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs has awarded almost $9 million in grant funding to four single-county authorities across the state.
